ALTON — Alton showed what Head Coach Rick Reinhart called a “night and day difference” from the previous week against Belleville West, battling Chatham-Glenwood closely for much of a football contest Friday night, Aug. 28, 2026, at Public School Stadium after a loss to Belleville West.

Coach Reinhart said he was pleased with the Redbirds’ effort against Chatham-Glenwood, saying the team played hard and stayed together.

Redbirds' quarterback Josh Lumpkins connected with Markeese Barnett for a 1-yard touchdown, and the point-after attempt was good for Alton’s first score.

Tra’von Burnett later set up another Redbirds score with a 37-yard gain from scrimmage. Tommy Whitehorn scored from 1 yard out, and the PAT made it 14-7 with 9:24 left before halftime.

Lumpkins, whom Reinhart called “an excellent athlete,” finished with 16 pass completions for 195 yards. Burnett added 50 rushing yards for Alton.

“I told the kids not to be negative, but they got a taste of what it is like to play with a great team and come from behind,” Reinhart said. “We made a couple of crucial mistakes, but the boys will learn from that. We just have to do this for four quarters, and we will have different results.”

Reinhart said the Redbirds would return to work after the game.

“The bottom line, it was a night-and-day difference this week than last week’s loss to Belleville West,” Reinhart said. “Played hard, stayed together as a team. Have to do it for four quarters, have to continue to work, go back to the drawing board in the morning and start preparing for next week.”
