ST. LOUIS — A deep partial lunar eclipse turned much of the full moon red over St. Louis on the night of Aug. 27-28, 2026, as local skywatchers and the St. Louis Planetarium tracked peak viewing late Thursday night, Aug. 27, 2026, because the eclipse covered a vast majority of the moon’s face.

The eclipse created a reddened “blood moon” effect visible across the Scientific American coverage area, including St. Louis. The event coincided with a bright full moon, giving viewers a prominent late-night skywatching opportunity.

The next Harvest Moon will peak at 11:49 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 26, 2026, Central Daylight Time, or 12:49 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time. Because of the timing, it will be best viewed in the St. Louis area on the evenings of Sept. 26 and Sept. 27, 2026.
A Harvest Moon is the full moon that occurs closest to the autumnal equinox. Historically, its bright light gave farmers extra time to harvest crops into the evening.
For best viewing, look toward the eastern horizon just after sunset, when the moon can take on a large, golden-orange glow.
