Explorers capture Alton Redbirds Invite title with 3-1 win over rival Alton.

GODFREY — Marquette Catholic handled the city rivalry atmosphere at Piasa Motor Fuels Field and defeated Alton High 3-1 Saturday, Aug. 29, 2026, in the championship game of the Alton Redbird Invitational Tournament, claiming the tournament title after both teams advanced from Saturday morning semifinals.

Marquette took a 1-0 lead in the 17th minute when James Fischer scored. The Explorers made it 2-0 by halftime when Parker Belchik scored.

Belchik added another goal in the second half to give Marquette a 3-0 lead. Alton got on the scoreboard with 1:05 remaining on a penalty kick.

Marquette's boys soccer squad is Tucker's Automotive Repair & Tire Male Athletes of the Month for their fantastic 4-0 overall start under head coach Brian Hoener.

"It is great to start to win four games in a week and actually pick up a plaque and a trophy and do it against one of our rivals in Alton. We couldn’t ask for a better week, but we have to remember it is a long season."

Marquette Captures Semifinal Win Over Orchard Farm

Marquette Catholic advanced to the championship with a 3-1 win over Orchard Farm in the other semifinal Saturday morning. Belchik scored two goals, and William Waters added one.

The Redbirds will get a second chance against the Explorers when the teams are scheduled to play their annual city rivalry game on Sept. 12, 2026, at Public School Stadium.

Marquette is scheduled to play Gibault Catholic on Tuesday, Sept. 1, 2026, weather permitting.

Marquette Catholic student fans turned out strong in their school colors on opposite ends of the field from the Redbirds fans. The fans were very spirited and cheered back and forth with rival Alton fans in the contest.
