From 12–1 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 3, 2025, at The Wedge in Alton, financial advisor Curtis Stephens will cover basic tax strategies to reduce taxes for retirees. Stephens noted that his goal is to support people in managing their finances. He wants to make sure community members have the information they need to stay financially healthy.

“It boils down to my heart. I feel that I’m called to make a difference, not a living,” he said. “People look for folks that they can trust, that are consistent, keep their word. But above all, nobody cares what you know until they know that you care. So we serve first. That’s our main priority.”

As part of this goal, Stephens Planning hosts many free lunch-and-learns and seminars that aim to inform people about tax laws and how to save money. Stephens wants to ensure people can make informed decisions about their money.

He acknowledges that the tax laws are complicated and ever-changing, and he encourages people to bring questions to the seminar on Sept. 3. He is happy to answer any questions and will also go over basic retirement planning strategies.

“Not all money is created equally. It’s hard to keep track of what’s what when you’re trying to be tax-efficient,” he noted.

Stephens pointed out that the Big Beautiful Bill, passed last year, has presented people with “a unique planning opportunity” because some of the tax laws aren’t scheduled to be discussed until 2028. He believes that the government is “always playing with our tax laws,” but this is a chance to minimize your taxes by learning more.

In addition to the lunch-and-learns and seminars, Stephens Planning hosts monthly Community Thursdays on the last Thursday of each month. These days invite people to come in and ask questions about their finances at no cost.

Community Thursdays are targeted toward people who are struggling to maintain their finances. Stephens is happy to talk to these community members about basic financial planning advice and answer any questions they might have.

“It’s designed for people that are in a hole. It’s designed for people that are in a rut,” Stephens said. “It’s time that we set aside to meet the community where they’re at. But at the end of the day, this is designed for people that are stuck.”

It’s important for Stephens to be available like this. He believes it’s his responsibility to share his knowledge and help folks. Through the seminars and the Community Thursdays offerings, he hopes he can reach people in our community who need financial planning support.

As Stephens Planning gears up for their next lunch-and-learn on Sept. 3, Stephens hopes many people come out for the event at The Wedge. He emphasized that these seminars aren’t a sales pitch, and there’s no obligation to work with the business. Ultimately, he simply wants to help community members make decisions that are right for them to support their financial futures.

“We wouldn’t be here without the clients, the community, the people surrounding us,” he added. “Successful people, they don’t ever get there by themselves. We’re thankful for all the people who have trusted us, surrounded us, given us an opportunity to serve them. It just keeps going. It’s a beautiful thing.”
