Calhoun County Grand Jury Indicts Kampsville Man On Predatory Criminal Sexual Assault Charge

HARDIN — A Calhoun County grand jury on Aug. 17, 2026, indicted Richard J. Large, 34, of Kampsville, on a charge of predatory criminal sexual assault involving a victim under 13 years old after a sheriff’s office investigation into a child sexual assault complaint in Kampsville, authorities said.

The charge is a Class X felony, according to a Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office press release.

The investigation began April 21, 2026, when the sheriff’s office received a complaint of a child sexual assault alleged to have occurred in Kampsville, in Calhoun County. Sheriff Zach Hardin investigated the complaint, gathered evidence and conducted interviews, the release said.

The sheriff’s office said it partnered during the investigation with the Illinois Department of Child & Family Services and the United Child Advocacy Network, which assisted with forensic child interviews.

After the indictment, an arrest warrant was issued. Large was arrested without incident later Aug. 17 by officers from the Carrolton Police Department, authorities said.

Large appeared Aug. 18, 2026, before Judge Charles H.W. Burch for an initial appearance and pretrial detention hearing. Under the statutory requirements of the SAFE-T Act, Large was granted conditional pretrial release with GPS monitoring while the case is pending, the sheriff’s office said.

The Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office thanked the victim for coming forward, as well as the United Child Advocacy Network, the Illinois Department of Child & Family Services, the Calhoun County State’s Attorney’s Office and the Carrolton Police Department for their assistance.

These charges, as well as the statements made herein, are based upon probable cause. The defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
