The restaurant offers great meals with great service. A goal of each of the fifteen staff members is to make customers feel welcome in an inviting, intimate atmosphere. With a goal of providing an enjoyable experience, staff goes out of their way to accommodate requests for menu variations. “We work hard to treat our staff well because if the people feel good about their job, they will feel good about how they treat the customers,” says owner Mark Pruitt.
In addition to striving for exceptional customer service, the Delmar House delivers quality food choices by utilizing local procurement of ingredients whenever possible. “We consider our offerings to represent European pub classics and kitchens around the world,” says Mark. Paired with the menu is a curated selection of beverages that include craft beers, wines and mixed drinks.
On October 4, (which at this writing is sold out with a waiting list) the Delmar House is having a “Sunday Supper” that consists of a four to five course meal. In combination with a wonderful selection of food, each course is paired with a select beverage. To celebrate the two-year anniversary, there are two of these events being planned for November. The cost is $75 per person.
The Delmar Public House is owned and operated by Mark, Melissa (wife) and Tim Pruitt (cousin). Mark brings extensive restaurant experience to the operation. He got his start years ago working at the Sportsmen’s Club and the Pasta House busing tables and as a dishwasher. He then went to the Riverwalk Steak House in downtown Alton, working under the direction of chef Ralph Smith. From 2000 to 2019, he owned and operated Bigelo’s Bistro in Edwardsville.
Mark and Melissa had owned the building where Delmar Public House is located for about 15 years. Melissa had been operating her business, Kindercarry™ in the basement. The couple decided to use the upper level of the building to open a restaurant. As the space had been used as a salon, it required major renovation. The kitchen was constructed and the serving area seats approximately 65, which adds to the intimate atmosphere of the dining experience.
During off-hours the facility can be chartered for private events. During the Holidays, it is common for private lunch parties. On Sundays, it may be used for such things as “Celebration of Life” events.
Many customers of the former Bigelo’s still patronize the Delmar Public House. There is a solid core of customers that come from Elsah, Grafton and Jerseyville. Mark says that an immediate goal is to continue in developing a solid customer base.
