EDWARDSVILLE – Additional traffic safety patrols conducted over the past year in Edwardsville led to more than 230 citations being issued and multiple arrests for a range of illegal and unsafe driving infractions. The extra patrols were made possible through the Sustained Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP), which is funded by federal highway safety funds administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation.
The Edwardsville Police Department on Friday, October 2, shared the results of the extra traffic safety patrols, which were carried out between Oct. 1, 2025, and Sept. 30, 2026. The patrols were conducted in addition to officers' regular assignments and calls for service, allowing the department to dedicate focused time to the driving behaviors most often resulting in serious crashes.

During the additional enforcement period, officers issued 137 speeding citations, 45 distracted driving citations, 52 citations for other offenses, and made six traffic-related arrests. The grant-funded extra work periods took aim at speeding, distracted driving, seat belt use and impaired driving.
The patrols supported statewide traffic safety campaigns including "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" and "Click It or Ticket." The STEP grant is part of a statewide effort to improve roadway safety and reduce traffic-related fatalities.
