ALTON - Alton High School senior Lauren Conwell, whose service includes mentoring elementary students and volunteering at community events, has been named the school’s October Alton-Godfrey Rotary Student of the Month in recognition of her academic achievement, leadership, and community involvement.
Conwell has maintained an A average while taking honors, Advanced Placement, and dual-credit courses, earning a place on the honor roll every semester. She has been inducted into the National Honor Society, National Technical Honor Society, and Quill and Scroll International Honor Society.
She serves as copy editor of the Tatler, the school’s award-winning yearbook. Selected for the role after demonstrating problem-solving skills and initiative in Honors Graphic Production, Conwell manages and edits articles documenting students’ stories and experiences.
Conwell was recently elected president of Interact Club, the school’s service organization sponsored by the Alton-Godfrey Rotary Club. Through the club, she has volunteered alongside Rotary members at community events, including the chili cook-off and downtown Christmas tree lighting.
Her service extends beyond school. As vice president of the Youth Group of the Alton Section of the National Council of Negro Women, Conwell has rung bells for the Salvation Army, served meals at First Presbyterian Church’s Saturday Café and assisted with the annual Sickle Cell Walk at Rock Springs Park. She has also mentored elementary students through the YWCA’s Girl Circle program.
“When you are willing to help other people, it is no longer about you; it becomes about how you will positively affect the next person,” Conwell said. “It's something about helping others that brings me unexplainable joy.”
Her school activities have also included volleyball, track and field, Student Council, Upward Bound, Redbird Nest, Spanish Club, Biology Club, Link Crew and Creative Writing Club.
Conwell has worked as a hostess and food runner at Bluff City Grill since she was 16. She credits the experience with strengthening her communication skills and ability to work with others under pressure.
This past summer, she served as a marketing intern at Senior Services Plus, creating social media content and collaborating with the organization’s marketing director on other marketing efforts.
After graduation, Conwell plans to attend Hampton University in Hampton, Virginia, majoring in business administration with a minor in political science and pursuing a pre-law track. Her long-term goal is to become a corporate attorney and possibly a CEO.
