Alton Considering ‘Wayfinding’ Project In Latest Tourism Push

ALTON – Alton officials are looking into making the city’s top attractions easier to navigate to and from.

On July 20, 2026, Committee of the Whole members approved a Professional Services Agreement with RVi Planning + Landscape Architecture totaling $38,500 for the “Alton Wayfinding Program.” Alderwoman Rosie Brown was absent.

The proposal consists of two phases: preliminary services totaling $4,500 and schematic design services totaling $34,000. Phase 1 would include a project kickoff meeting with city staff and a “field review of potential wayfinding locations,” according to a City Council memo from Andi Campbell, deputy director of Planning & Development.

Phase 2 would involve evaluating and developing possible signage options and locations at up to nine key sites around the city. The project’s second phase also calls for an opinion of probable construction costs, drawings and renderings of possible design concepts, and a presentation of recommendations at two public meetings.

“The Alton community currently lacks a coordinated wayfinding system that effectively directs residents and visitors to the city’s commercial, tourism, cultural, and recreation assets,” Campbell’s memo states.

“The proposed project will establish a cohesive wayfinding strategy that improves navigation throughout the city while reinforcing the city’s brand identity. The effort will evaluate gateway signage, directional signage, and destination identification elements at key locations throughout the community.”

According to the resolution, the city has a remaining balance of $590,000 in American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds previously allocated for the purposes of economic development and small business support. If the agreement gains approval from the City Council this Wednesday, July 22, a total of $38,500 in ARPA funds will go towards the project.
