Alton Navy Veteran Battles Lung Cancer With Community Support

ALTON - Alton resident Greg Snyder, a U.S. Navy veteran and longtime community volunteer, is seeking financial help through a GoFundMe organized by Jacinda Dunlap to cover mounting medical expenses and major vehicle repairs needed for transportation to the John Cochran VA Hospital in St. Louis.

The online fundraiser says Snyder underwent surgery last year to remove lung cancer from his right lung and is now facing new concerns after “a mass in his left lung has doubled in size in recent months.”

The GoFundMe also says his vehicle “is no longer running and requires major repairs,” which he needs for ongoing treatment at the St. Louis VA hospital.

The campaign states the funds are intended to help pay for “car repairs, medical and dental bills, and related living expenses,” as well as “future moving expenses.”

Snyder served in the Navy as “a Machinist Mate Nuclear Power Third Class aboard the USS Nimitz from 1975–1981,” according to the fundraiser. It also describes his community involvement in Alton, saying he has spent more than 25 years photographing local events, fundraisers, and festivals, often at no cost, and that he was honored as Volunteer of the Year in 1995 and 2023.

Dunlap wrote that Snyder “was hesitant to allow me to ask for help on his behalf,” adding, “now he needs the support of the community he has served so faithfully.”
