Alton Police Investigate Deadly Overnight Shooting on Leonard Street

Police responding to a shots-fired call discovered a victim dead inside a residence and the suspected shooter dead from a self-inflicted wound. Investigators remained on scene Thursday.

ALTON - Alton Police are investigating a shooting early Thursday, July 16, 2026, in the 600 block of Leonard Street, where officers found one gunshot victim dead inside a residence and the suspect also dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Alton Police Chief Jarrett Ford said officers were dispatched at about 12:38 a.m. July 16, 2026, after a report of shots fired inside a residence. The Alton Police Department established a perimeter, and the Metro East SWAT team responded to assist.

Chief Ford also said there is no longer an active threat to the immediate area or the community at large.

Investigators remained on scene Thursday as the investigation continued. Police asked residents in the immediate area to follow the direction of investigators at the scene.

No further information was available for release pending proper notification of the deceased's family, police said. The Madison County Coroner's Office has arrived at the scene, as has the Illinois State Police Crime Investigators.

Ameren Illinois has the electric and gas turned off to the home.
