Alton Senior Michael Henry Jr. Stands Out In Multiple Ways At His School

ALTON - Michael Henry Jr. is a senior at Alton High School who has distinguished himself through academic achievement, athletics, leadership, and service to his community. Michael is one of the Alton-Godfrey Rotary Club Students of the Month for September 2026.

Throughout his four years at AHS, Michael has maintained a 4.146 GPA while challenging himself with a rigorous course load that includes seven Honors courses, a dual-credit course, and an Advanced Placement course.

Michael’s academic accomplishments have also led him to become involved in several academic organizations at Alton High School. He is a member of the National Honor Society, Spanish Club, and Mu Alpha Theta, the national high school mathematics honor society. Among his coursework, Michael is especially proud of his accomplishments in Principles of Engineering, Physics, and Trigonometry—courses that have helped prepare him for his future studies in engineering.

Beyond the classroom, Michael is actively involved in both school and community organizations. He participates in Upward Bound, 100 Black Men Pathways to Manhood, Minority Excellence, and the Alton NAACP Youth Council. Through these organizations, Michael has developed his leadership skills while finding meaningful opportunities to serve others and make a positive impact in his community.

Community service has been an important part of Michael’s high school experience. He has provided free haircuts at back-to-school events, volunteered at community celebrations and events, and participated in tutoring. Tutoring has been especially meaningful to Michael because it allows him to directly help others succeed. Through his service, he has developed a belief that success is measured not only by personal accomplishments but also by the positive impact one can have on others.

Athletics have also played an important role in Michael’s development. As a participant in both football and basketball, he has learned the importance of discipline, teamwork, accountability, perseverance, and trusting those around him. His experiences as a student-athlete have allowed him to build lasting relationships and create memories that he will carry with him well beyond high school.

Following graduation from Alton High School, Michael plans to attend Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, where he intends to major in Computer Engineering. He believes the challenging academic experiences, leadership opportunities, athletics, and community involvement he has experienced at AHS have prepared him well for the demands of college and his future career.

When reflecting on his high school experience, Michael is most proud of the growth he has experienced as a student, athlete, leader, and person. He credits his family, teachers, coaches, mentors, friends, and faith for helping him reach this point and is grateful to everyone who has supported and encouraged him throughout his journey.

As Michael prepares for his next chapter, he plans to carry the lessons he has learned at Alton High School with him. His goals extend beyond earning a degree and building a successful career; he hopes to continue giving back to his community, make his family proud, and use his education and experiences to create opportunities for both himself and others.
