The city crew was viewed in the morning on Third Street in the cleanup role.

The cleanup efforts followed a storm that began Saturday and continued into Sunday, leaving the city covered in snow.

Alton Mayor David Goins praised the Public Works and police departments for their response during and after the storm.

“They did a phenomenal job. The Public Works crew was ready, locked and loaded, and did a great job to get our streets plowed and salted so we could travel on a weekend,” Goins said.

He noted that reduced traffic over the weekend helped crews complete their work more efficiently.

With more than 700 streets in Alton, clearing the city is a complex task, the mayor added.

“The Public Works and Police Department staff are dedicated and they did what they were supposed to do. I’m proud of them,” Goins said.

Goins said the Alton Public Works team prioritized main thoroughfares first and continued working on side streets throughout the day on Wednesday.

The coordinated efforts aimed to restore safe travel conditions for residents as the city recovers from the winter storm’s impact.
