ALTON - Ameren Illinois has renewed its $5,000 grant to Books for Newborns, allowing for the continued distribution of books to new mothers as well as children receiving outpatient therapy at Alton Memorial Hospital.

Books for Newborns is an all-volunteer charitable organization that has distributed more than 12,000 book bags containing more than 50,000 books free of charge since its founding in early 2017. The St. Louis group distributed 2,060 books free of charge to AMH patients during 2020, Ameren Illinois' first year of sponsorship of the program. With its 2021 grant, Ameren Illinois has now provided $10,000 in support of the effort.

"We couldn't be more pleased with the support Ameren Illinois has provided to help us get established on the Illinois side of the river," said Mike Hogan, Chairman of Books for Newborns. "Our success with our program for newborns was so well received by new mothers, the nurses caring for them and the hospital's administrators, that we extended our service to include providing books for older children participating in outpatient therapy mid-year. We look forward to many successful years working with the hospital and the school district."
