According to investigators, occupants inside the residence heard loud banging and screaming coming from outside. A 38-year-old female resident went downstairs to investigate and saw her 17-year-old niece engaged in a physical altercation with an unknown larger individual on the front porch. Belleville Police said the individual wore a hood that obscured their face. Concerned for her niece’s safety after hearing multiple screams for help, the woman opened the front door and fired a single shot from a firearm.
The altercation ended, and it was later determined that the person shot was the woman’s nephew and the niece’s brother. Four juveniles and two adults were inside the residence at the time. The woman who fired the shot holds a valid Illinois Firearm Owner’s Identification (FOID) card and Concealed Carry Permit.
Investigators found that the niece and nephew had arrived at the residence unannounced and became involved in a verbal argument that escalated into a physical fight.
On Tuesday, January 20, the Belleville Police Department forwarded the investigation to the St. Clair County State’s Attorney’s Office for review. The State’s Attorney’s Office declined to file charges related to the incident.
The Belleville Police Department expressed condolences to those affected by the event and asked anyone with information to contact their Investigations Division at 618-234-1212.
