The victory followed a home sweep of Granite City and a road loss to Belleville West earlier in the week.

McKenna Dondanville and Genna Roark won at No. 1 doubles against Collinsville, while Ellie Hanebutt and Lydia Schrumpf won at No. 2. Caroline Cannon and Laila Kiger completed the doubles sweep at No. 3.

Dondanville, Roark, Kiger, Maddy Henkhaus and Vail Schwaab earned singles victories. Kiger needed three sets to win, while Schrumpf lost a close match at No. 1.

“We dropped a close match at number one, but Lydia gave it all she had,” Alton coach Jesse Macias said. “There are no easy nights at number one and I'm proud that she represents our school at that position.”

Macias praised the Redbirds’ play across the lineup.

“Doubles came out playing great again, and we also looked really solid in singles,” he said. “McKenna and Genna give people fits at two and three, Maddy and Vail go out and just take care of business at five and six.”

The Redbirds defeated Granite City 9-0 at home Tuesday, Sept. 29, winning every singles match in straight sets and all three doubles matches 8-0.

Schrumpf defeated Jersey Egbert 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 singles, and Dondanville beat Sophia McCullough 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2. Kiger defeated Peyton Shipley 6-4, 7-5 at No. 3, while Henkhaus beat Neriah Ramos 6-2, 6-0 at No. 4. Alton also won the final two singles matches 6-0, 6-1, with Schwaab defeating Adyson Ariana and Cannon beating Anna Taylor.

Dondanville and Roark, Schrumpf and Hanebutt, and Cannon and Sadie Perkins earned the doubles victories.

That win came a day after Alton lost to Belleville West in Belleville on Monday, Sept. 28.

Earlier in the stretch, Alton defeated Mascoutah 8-1 at home Tuesday, Sept. 22, in the teams’ first Southwestern Conference meeting. The Redbirds won two of three doubles matches before sweeping singles.

Dondanville and Roark won at No. 1 doubles, and Schrumpf and Hanebutt won at No. 2. Cannon and Kiger lost at No. 3.

“Triad and Mascoutah give this conference even more depth,” Macias said. “Mascoutah is well coached and they played well against us. We are excited to have them in the conference.”

The Mascoutah victory followed a 6-3 road win over Belleville East. Alton built a 4-2 lead in singles behind victories from Dondanville, Roark, Henkhaus and Schwaab, then added two doubles wins.

Roark recovered from losing a first-set tiebreaker to win in three sets. In doubles, Cannon and Kiger rallied from a 6-3 deficit to win 9-7 and clinch the team victory. Schrumpf and Hanebutt also came back to win at No. 2.

“Our singles players really set the tone,” Macias said.
