East Alton-Wood River Students Honored With Rotary Award

WOOD RIVER - The Riverbend East Rotary Club recently recognized the October Service Above Self award recipients from East Alton-Wood River High School-Ayla Thomas and Malachi Carter. They were presented their certificates by club President Mark Smith.

Ayla is a student whose dedication shines brightly in every endeavor she undertakes. Ayla's commitment to scholarship is evident in her impressive 3.7 GPA and her standing as an active member of the National Honor Society (NHS). She understands that true excellence isn't just about grades; it's about using that knowledge to uplift those around her. We see this dedication in her leadership roles. As a vital part of the Student Council, she helps shape the student experience for the entire school. More profoundly, her role in the Big Sisters program exemplifies her compassionate heart, offering guidance and support that makes a tangible, positive difference in the lives of younger students. Ayla's service, leadership, and unwavering commitment to academic rigor make her a true role model.

Malachi embodies the very essence of the Rotary motto: Service Above Self. He is an exceptional student leader. You see his dedication everywhere—from his involvement in Student Council and his role as a Senior Mentor, guiding the next class, to his commitment on the football field.

He is also a consistently strong student, showing that excellence in the classroom and in the community are not mutually exclusive goals. Malachi shows up, offering not just help with tasks, but genuine companionship and support to our elderly neighbors.
