Four-Year Prison Term Imposed on Driver in Fatal Alton Accident
Bethalto resident Murray pleads guilty to not reporting deadly crash that resulted in the death of a motorized bicycle rider.
EDWARDSVILLE — David A. Murray of Bethalto has been sentenced to four years in prison after pleading guilty to failure to report an accident resulting in death, a Class 1 felony, in Madison County.

Murray entered his guilty plea on April 28, 2025, to the charge stemming from a Dec. 29, 2024, crash on Humbert Road in Alton. The accident resulted in the death of Steven J. Coryell, 58, at the scene of the accident.
According to court documents, Murray, the driver of a 2017 Ford F-150, failed to stop and remain at the scene, and did not report the crash to authorities within 30 minutes, violating Illinois law. Coryell was operating a motorized bicycle at the time.
The plea agreement included a sentencing cap of eight years. At sentencing, Assistant State’s Attorney Joseph Reames requested the maximum sentence, but Judge Jumper imposed a four-year term.
Counts II and III of the original charges — leaving the scene of an accident involving injury or death and obstructing justice — were dismissed as part of the plea deal.
The case is filed under No. 2025CF000044 in the Third Judicial Circuit of Madison County. Thomas A. Haine, State’s Attorney for Madison County, is prosecuting the case on behalf of the state of Illinois.
