Free Grafton Concert Brings Together Two Community Arts Groups

New Horizons Band Previews Free Concert at The Vineyards at Grafton
GRAFTON - The New Horizons Band has partnered with the Jersey County Arts Council to offer a free concert this weekend.

From 2–4 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 27, 2026, at Grafton Winery the Vineyards, community members can enjoy big band music, polka, movie themes and more by the New Horizons Band. The goal of the band is to provide older adults with musical opportunities, and the Jersey County Arts Council was eager to sponsor a concert and support this work.
“We try really hard to host as many things as we can for the community that don’t have a fee attached to them,” said Sherry with the arts council. “How can we get the arts and these kinds of opportunities out to people so they can just go enjoy them? If they want to make a donation, great. If they just want to sit back and get a glass of wine or drink a beer or have a nice charcuterie plate, all of which they have at the Vineyards, you can get all that and just sit and enjoy a couple of hours of great music. It’s a beautiful view. We just try really hard to provide as many of those things as we can.”
Sherry helped form the Jersey County Arts Council five years ago as a way to offer more artistic opportunities to the community. The New Horizons Band started a chapter in the Riverbend region 30 years ago with a similar goal in mind.
“Somebody decided that they wanted to be in a band because they missed it,” Don with the New Horizons Band said. “They used to be in one or they always wanted to be in one, so they got some people together and it just started there and spread across the country, around the world. There are hundreds of bands like this around the world. It’s just amazing.”
The Riverbend chapter of the New Horizons Band practices from 5–7 p.m. every Monday night at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Godfrey, and anyone is welcome to come out and listen. Don encourages those who want to know more about joining the band to come by and chat with its members.
The band is open to all ages, and many of the members are in their 70s and 80s. Their oldest member is 92 years old and their youngest member is 29. Don loves playing and building relationships with these fellow musicians.
The band is looking forward to its special Sept. 27 concert at the Vineyards. Sherry and Don agreed that the setting is gorgeous and the music will be a lot of fun, with a variety of tunes on the setlist.
As the New Horizons Band prepares to celebrate its 30th anniversary in the region, Don and his bandmates can’t wait to share their work with the community. Sherry and the Jersey County Arts Council are equally excited to engage with the arts in this new way.
“Come out and join the party,” Sherry said.
