Free Services Available For Alton Steel Employees Facing Layoffs At Rapid Response Workshop
Workers are encouraged to attend informational sessions about retraining, healthcare, and unemployment support following company closure announcement.
ALTON - Alton Steel Inc. announced earlier this week it will cease operations after this week, ending 25 years of business in Alton. The closure affects 253 employees, as well as contractors and vendors connected to the company. To assist those affected, a Rapid Response Workshop will be held from 1 to 2:30 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 30, 2026, at the Local 3643 Union Hall, located at 2821 E. Broadway in Alton.
The Rapid Response Workshop is designed to inform employees about free services available under the Workforce Innovation Opportunity Act.

In a statement, Alton Steel acknowledged the skills of its workforce and said it is working with state and local officials to support employees during the transition.
“Our employees are among the most skilled steelworkers in the region. We have partnered with state and local officials to provide resources and to help our employees find their next opportunity,” the company said. “ASI employees have skills and experience that can benefit this region, and we’re working to support employee transitions.”
The Illinois Department of Commerce emphasized the importance of accessing the layoff recovery page created specifically for Alton Steel employees. The page provides information on healthcare coverage, reemployment training services, and unemployment insurance matters. For those unable to attend the Jan. 30 workshop, resources and links are available online to support affected workers.
The closure marks a significant change for the Alton community, as the company’s operations come to an end after a quarter-century presence in the region.
