Glen Carbon Approves Shared Use Path Phase 3 Design Agreement

GLEN CARBON – The third and final phase of the Glen Carbon Road Shared Use Path project is set to be designed next year.

Village trustees this week unanimously approved an agreement totaling $118,620 with Volkert Inc. to perform design engineering services for Phase 3 of the Glen Carbon Road Shared Use Path project.

This latest section of the path is set to be designed in 2026, with construction expected to follow in 2027. At this week’s Village Board meeting, Public Works Director Scott Slemer said the village will select a firm to perform construction engineering services later this year.

Once completed, the full shared use path along Glen Carbon Road will connect Schon Park to Route 159. The project’s third phase will see the current path extended from Mark Trail Drive to Route 159.

The estimated cost of the work to be completed in Phase 3 totals $1,125,000. This includes $900,000 for construction, $120,000 for design engineering, and $105,000 for construction engineering.

The project is being mostly funded by a $897,544 grant from the Illinois Transportation Enhancement Program (ITEP). The village also secured a grant of up to $190,981 for the project from the Metro East Park and Recreation District (MEPRD).
