Trustee Sarah Woodman presented Rain with the “Good Neighbor of Godfrey” award at the committee’s May 5, 2026, meeting. She said that while Rain has served as an owner and insurance broker with Norton & Rain Inc. for 50 years, Godfrey officials especially want to honor his many community service endeavors over the years.

John Rain is and always has been a Difference Maker in his community.

Rain is a 40-year member of the North Alton-Godfrey Business Council, a volunteer nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting community activities, projects, and local businesses. By selling tickets for the organization’s 50/50 raffle, Rain has been instrumental in raising funds to support their charitable efforts.

“For years, he coordinated the council’s work in providing food baskets for less fortunate folks during the holiday season,” Woodman said of Rain. “More recently, his work has been in supporting the All God’s Children Need Shoes program.”

Woodman also spoke highly of Rain’s involvement in the Alton-Godfrey Rotary Club, where he’s been a member for 40 years and currently serves as president. Rain has also participated in the organization’s Sleep In Heavenly Peace program, which oversees the construction and delivery of quality bunk beds to children and families in need of a safe, comfortable place to sleep.

Rain has also served on the board of the local Boys & Girls Club for 20 years, which Woodman said provides engaging programming that helps Godfrey youth develop self-esteem and reach their full potential. He is also a 25-year member of the Great Rivers Choral Society.

“Those that know John know that he seems to always have a smile on his face, and met others with a warm and friendly demeanor,” Woodman said. “He’s a longtime Godfrey resident with his wife Holly and two adult children who live in the area.”

Rain himself said Godfrey is full of caring residents like himself who never seek recognition.

“Our community has so many good people that do so much good work without any thought of recognition, and I share that with them,” Rain said.

The Good Neighbor award program allows individuals to nominate village residents they feel have gone above and beyond to serve the Godfrey community. Woodman said village officials are always looking for residents to recognize and encouraged the public to continue nominating their outstanding neighbors.

To nominate someone for the “Good Neighbor” award, simply fill out the Good Neighbor form on the village website, save it as a PDF file, and email the completed form to Economic Development Director Jim Mager at jmager@godfreyil.org. The nominated individual will then be contacted for their approval prior to being recognized.
