ALTON – Halpin Music is helping band students and parents start the next school year with savings by offering a limited-time giveaway during “Early Bird” instrument rentals through Aug. 7, 2026.
Mark Landon with Halpin Music Company stopped by Our Daily Show! on Riverbender.com to highlight everything band students and parents should know about instrument rentals and more before school starts again.
For decades, Halpin has made access to musical instruments more affordable through their instrument rental program – a lifeline for some families as new instruments can often cost thousands of dollars.
“What we do hasn’t really changed much over the decades, because it works,” Landon said. “It gives the parent and the player all the flexibility they need as they develop into musicians.”
To help parents beat the back-to-school rush, Halpin is currently offering an “Early Bird Rental Special” through Aug. 7, 2026. Those who act quickly and rent an instrument online or in-store before Aug. 7 will receive a free wire music stand, a $20 value.
Under the Halpin program, instruments can be rented by the month or for the whole school year. While the school year option offers long-term savings, the monthly option allows greater flexibility. Both plans aim to save parents money, whether their child has years of experience with an instrument or is still testing out their talents.
“Sometimes, they’ll start out on an instrument – say, a trumpet – and they’ll say, ‘You know what? Maybe I really did want to play the saxophone,’” Landon said. “We have that ability to exchange built into the program, so they don’t have to worry about getting it right the first time.”
Rental fees include monthly maintenance costs, and Landon said Halpin’s repair technicians have a combined 80 years of experience. These include Ben Davis at the Centralia location and Tim Whitesell at the Alton location, the latter of whom has been repairing instruments for Halpin since 1972.
Halpin’s instrument rental program also includes weekly pickup and delivery to the student’s school, and rental instruments can be returned at any time. Those looking to purchase their rented instrument can use 100% of their rental credit (minus the monthly maintenance fees) towards the purchase of the instrument or any other band/orchestra instrument of their choice.
Different monthly and yearly rates apply to different instrument categories. Monthly rental rates range from $35 to $75 per month, while yearly options range from $216 to $540 for the nine-month school year term.
