“We are just treating as much as we can, but sometimes the snow comes down heavier and just takes the chemical off,” Monroe said.

He likened the effort to keep roads clear to shoveling a walkway or driveway during a snowstorm, highlighting the difficulty of maintaining treated surfaces when snow continues to accumulate. Monroe noted that northern areas of the region have experienced heavier snowfall and colder temperatures, which reduce the effectiveness of road treatment chemicals.

Monroe shared his observations from traveling through the area, and said, “The further north you go, I have driven from Southern St. Clair County, Monroe County, and now Madison County. Monroe probably had the least impact of snowfall.”

The Illinois Department of Transportation continues to monitor conditions and treat roads throughout the evening and on Tuesday morning, Dec. 2, 2025, to ensure safety for motorists.
