Lewis And Clark YouthBuild Students Earn Godfrey 'Good Neighbor' Award

GODFREY – Godfrey officials awarded several “Good Neighbors” at Tuesday’s Finance Committee meeting.

Trustee Sarah Woodman proudly presented the latest Good Neighbor Award to the Lewis and Clark Community College(LCCC) Building Futures YouthBuild program. 11 students in the program helped design and build obstacles in the Max Heinz Memorial Dog Park in Glazebrook Park.

Woodman said the program serves “out of school” youth ages 16 to 24, and is designed to help these students earn their General Educational Development (GED) credentials while gaining real-world experience and developing construction and leadership skills.

In addition to the students’ hard work, Woodman said the Max Heinz Memorial Dog Park would not have been possible without the generous contributions of Beth Heinz and the Heinz family. She also thanked Liz Campbell for her role in bringing the project to life through local youth collaboration.

As Woodman explained, Campbell informed her father, LCCC Board of Trustees Chair Dwight Werts, about the dog park after she and Heinz discussed getting the college involved in some way. Werts, knowing the capabilities of the school’s Workforce Training Program at the Scott Bibb Center, asked if she had a project in mind for the students to work on, paving the way for the dog park obstacle project.

Each student worked on an individual obstacle, including design, material requirements, construction, and installation. Woodman said some of the obstacles have already been installed in the large section of the dog park, with the remaining obstacles to be installed in the smaller portion of the dog park by Thanksgiving.

Woodman added that due to the hard work of the 11 YouthBuild students and everyone involved in the dog park’s creation, Glazebrook Park is now “a very well-equipped facility for our four-legged residents, while at the same time saving the tax-paying pet parents thousands upon thousands of dollars in costs.”
