Miller, who has played volleyball since sixth grade and club volleyball for three years, said the recognition is meaningful because of the effort behind it.

“Starting an athletic career young has led to moments like these,” Miller said. “It feels so good knowing I’m getting recognized for my accomplishments. All the hard work and dedication not only from myself, but the ones who have helped me along the way, gives me hope that I can take my career to the next level.”

She credited her parents and coaches, including coach Bethany Hoyland, for helping her develop as an athlete.

“I would like to thank my parents for always pushing me to be better,” Miller said. “Growing up, I’ve always been the athletic type, and they’ve never failed to push me to success. They always put their best foot forward to make sure I succeed, even in the hardest times. Along with all my coaches. When they see more can come from me, they push me harder than before, making sure I give 100%.”

Miller said one of the biggest things she values about volleyball is the leadership role it has given her.

“Something I love about volleyball is all the opportunities it has given me, and it has opened my eyes to how to be a leader,” she said. “Leading my team has always been a huge part of my heart; knowing my teammates can come to me with any questions or concerns makes me feel so valued as a player and as a captain.”

She said the sport has also shaped who she is off the court.

“Volleyball has helped me become who I am today because it continuously shows me more and more about how to be a team player and a leader,” Miller said. “It has also taught me many lessons in the real world, such as — you can’t be stuck on the last ball when the next happens so fast.”

Miller said she enjoys spending time with friends, but remains focused when it is time to compete.

“I love hanging out with my friends, but when the time comes for volleyball, I’m ready to forget about the outside world and put my all into the court,” she said.

She said she plans to continue playing volleyball in college and hopes to move into coaching later.

“I plan on continuing my career with volleyball in college,” Miller said. “Hopefully, I can make my way towards becoming a coach as my career comes to an end.”

Beyond athletics, Miller said she has long been interested in psychology, particularly criminal psychology. She also described herself as a versatile club volleyball player whose main position is setter.

Miller offered advice for others facing challenges in sports or elsewhere.

“Don’t give up on anything, no matter how hard it seems, or how many roadblocks you may hit,” she said. “Everything is accomplishable, even if you’re in a slump or having mental challenges. Give yourself grace, but stay dedicated to your goal because you can do it.”
