Monroe County Bar Fight Captured on Video in Early Hours
A Monday morning altercation at Freeda’s Bar involved a sudden unprovoked assault, prompting Monroe County deputies and local police to respond amid social media rumors.
MONROE COUNTY - Monroe County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to Freeda’s Bar in Renault, Illinois, early on March 1, 2026, after a report of a large fight, and Sheriff Neal Rohlfing said video surveillance shows a 25-year-old man struck a 49-year-old man without any prior interaction as misinformation about the incident circulated online.
Deputies were sent to the bar at 2071 Main Street at about 12:55 a.m. on March 1, 2026, Rohlfing said. The Waterloo Police Department assisted at the scene.

When deputies arrived, “many individuals involved had already left the scene,” Rohlfing said. He said that at the time deputies arrived, and into the following morning, “no individuals came forward requesting to pursue charges.”
Rohlfing said the sheriff’s department was releasing verified information “due to the level of misinformation circulating online,” while noting that the agency does not release investigative details publicly until sufficient facts have been verified.
According to the statement, Freeda’s Bar was “extremely crowded” late Feb. 28 and early March 1. Video evidence shows a 49-year-old man arrived at about 12:48 a.m. with his wife and two friends, along with their spouses, and the group socialized inside the bar.
At about 12:53 a.m., a 25-year-old man entered from the rear of the building and did not communicate with anyone inside before approaching the 49-year-old man, Rohlfing said.
“Video evidence clearly shows that the 49-year-old male never made contact with, spoke to, or engaged in any interaction with the 25-year-old male prior to the assault,” the statement said. Rohlfing said the 49-year-old man was talking with two other people and “was not even looking in the direction” of the 25-year-old man when he was struck.
The 25-year-old man threw a punch that caused the 49-year-old man to fall to the floor, Rohlfing said, and video shows the 25-year-old man attempting to continue the assault while the victim was on the ground.
Rohlfing said patrons intervened and tried to restrain the 25-year-old man, eventually taking him to the ground, where the 25-year-old struck his head on a pool table. During the disturbance, multiple people became involved in a physical altercation inside the bar, he said.
All individuals involved were eventually escorted or pushed out of the rear exit, Rohlfing said. He said reports from patrons indicated additional fighting continued outside, but that portion of the incident remains under investigation.
Rohlfing said investigators have followed up on leads and interviewed anyone who called in or submitted a tip.
No names are being released and no criminal charges have been filed, Rohlfing said. He said the case will be forwarded to the Monroe County State’s Attorney’s Office for review when the investigation is completed.
Rohlfing also said he requested the Illinois State Police conduct an independent review of investigative materials and evidence.
“I am aware of the significant amount of misinformation circulating regarding this incident and how it was handled. The beginning of the incident was captured on video, which we have secured as evidence,” Rohlfing said. “We take all calls for service seriously and handle them with the utmost integrity. It is unfortunate the level some individuals will go to in order to push an agenda. I have full confidence that the employees of the Sheriff’s Department will continue to provide the highest level of safety to the citizens of Monroe County despite baseless attacks by a few.”
The sheriff’s department reminded the public to avoid spreading unverified information on social media and said updates will be released when appropriate and when the investigation allows.
