
MADISON COUNTY - Mitchell Fire Department crews responded Wednesday afternoon, May 20, 2026, to a three-vehicle crash with reported entrapment on southbound Interstate 255 south of Interstate 270 near mile marker 30, where an overturned semi-truck tractor-trailer was leaking fuel, and one patient was later airlifted from the scene.

The Mitchell Fire Department said it was dispatched at approximately 1:32 p.m. on May 20, 2026, to the crash site. Responding units were advised that the semi-truck was overturned with fuel leaking and that drivers in two of the three vehicles were entrapped.
Mitchell Engine Unit #1121, with Chief #1100 on board, responded to the scene, according to the department. Long Lake Volunteer Fire Department was also dispatched to assist. Glen Carbon Fire Department and Rural Med Metro-East also assisted at the scene.
The Mitchell Fire Department said arriving units were assigned to stabilize the vehicles involved and extricate all patients. One patient was airlifted from the scene by an Air Evac Medical helicopter, according to the department.
All units returned to service at approximately 3:10 p.m. on Wednesday.
