One Airlifted: Two Injured In Major Collision In Wood River

A near head-on crash at Illinois Route 143 and Enviro Way left two people injured, prompting emergency responses and road closures.

The scene of a serious crash on Illinois Route 143 at Enviro Way. (Photo by Janina Roberts)WOOD RIVER — Two were injured in a near head-on collision Wednesday morning, Dec. 3, 2025, at the intersection of Illinois Route 143 and Enviro Way, authorities said.

The Wood River Fire Department responded to the crash at 8:41 a.m. on Dec. 3. Upon arrival, one patient was found unresponsive, Wood River Fire Chief Wade Stahlhut said. Stahlhut said that the individual was airlifted to a hospital in St. Louis in serious condition.

A second patient, who was stable, was also transported by ambulance to a hospital in St. Louis.

The crash involved two vehicles. Wood River Police and Fire departments were assisted at the scene by East Alton and Alton Police. Multiple road closures were implemented, including a complete shutdown of Route 143 from near the Lock and Dam to Route 3, Stahlhut said.

“We greatly appreciate the other police department's assistance and at the scene,” said Stahlhut.

Authorities have not released further details about the cause of the crash or the condition of the patients beyond what was reported at the scene.
