The popular café and gift shop was known for its unusual combination of colorful décor, home-style recipes, and a mission to “promote peace by supporting those who make a difference.” The café periodically highlighted local charities and donated a portion of proceeds to the featured organization. Purchases made in the gift shop helped to support various causes, such as fair trade, women’s shelters, braille literacy for children, and an end to human trafficking.

Owner Julie Connoyer described her mixed emotions about the move after five fulfilling and successful years. “On the one hand, I am sad and already nostalgic about ending a great run of fresh food, lively conversations, insights into charitable organizations, committed staff, and loyal customers.”

Connoyer founded Peace of Quiche six years ago by renovating a 1910 building that was once the Grafton phone company. “What started as a dream exceeded my wildest expectations, thanks especially to the many customers who embraced the café’s mission and shared their inspiring stories about making a difference. I have learned from these stories that all of us have had an experience when we need support from others or have had an opportunity to lend a helping hand.”

“On the other hand,” continued Connoyer, “I am already looking forward to my next venture.” She is still working on the details, including a location, but expects to continue her mission with an expanded version of a stand-alone charitable and “fair trade” gift shop. She also wants to focus on highlighting the work of local artists that designate a part of their proceeds to charitable organizations.

Donations to over 15 charities have been made by Peace of Quiche over five years. Connoyer hopes this has been helpful, but raising awareness has been even more important to her. “We don’t always need bright lights and billboards to have an impact on people, and I hope that in some modest way I have left a small footprint by inspiring others to think about service and peace.”

Grafton Chamber of Commerce President Janey Brummett confirmed the impact of the café for Grafton and commented that it will be missed. “Peace of Quiche was known for its lively atmosphere, warm hospitality, and unique mission. We wish Julie the best as she seeks to carry on these contributions with her new venture.”

Connoyer has an answer when asked why she is ending something that has been so successful. “I am a believer in leaving on a high, and I have always followed each step in life with another new challenge.” She is thankful for the many people, including family members, who helped her create what she calls a “special kind of community.”

Peace of Quiche at 111 East Main Street is open this weekend from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., but only for a relocation sale.
