BELLEVILLE - An off-duty East St. Louis police officer was among those involved in a shooting that left three people with gunshot wounds in the 200 block of Freedom Drive in Belleville, the Belleville Police Department said in an update on its ongoing investigation. Police did not provide the date or time of the shooting or identify what led to it. The department confirmed that the off-duty officer is male but did not specify his role in the incident.
Multiple people involved in the shooting continue to receive treatment at local hospitals. Their medical treatment has limited investigators’ ability to conduct necessary interviews and slowed the investigation, police said.
The department’s Investigations Division continues to examine the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Once the investigation is complete, the case will be presented to the St. Clair County State’s Attorney’s Office for review.
Investigators are not seeking additional suspects or witnesses in connection with the shooting. Based on information gathered so far, police said there is no indication of an ongoing threat to the public.
The department is withholding the identities of those involved and said it will release additional information when appropriate as the investigation progresses.
