A box-alarm was called and firefighters from Meadowbrook, Rosewood Heights and Cottage Hills responded. Firefighters were seen carrying out a mattress that had caught fire.

Bethalto Fire Chief Jay Grant said the fire likely started when a clothes basket fell onto a floor heater, melting the basket and causing the fire to climb the wall. “A few more minutes and it would have been a lot worse,” he said.

No injuries were reported.
