Shooting Leaves One Woman Dead and Another Injured
Belleville and Swansea Police responded to multiple gunshots on Jamestown Road resulting in one fatality and injuries to another woman Saturday night.
BELLEVILLE - On the night of Saturday, January 17, 2026, police responded to multiple shots fired on the 1700 block of Jamestown Road in Belleville, Illinois, resulting in one woman’s death and injuries to another, authorities said.

At approximately 11:19 p.m., officers from the Belleville and Swansea Police Departments arrived at the scene and found three female victims. One woman was deceased in the roadway, while two others were inside a nearby parked vehicle. One of the women in the vehicle had sustained gunshot injuries.
Because the shooting involved both Belleville and Swansea jurisdictions and the homicide occurred in the roadway, the Belleville Police Department assumed lead on the investigation.
Authorities identified a known acquaintance of the victims as the suspect and issued a regional “be on the lookout” alert for the individual and a suspect vehicle.
In the early hours of Sunday, January 18, at about 2:30 a.m., the Perry County Sheriff’s Department in Missouri located the suspect vehicle traveling southbound on Interstate 55. When law enforcement attempted to stop the vehicle, the suspect reportedly died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound before officers made contact.
The Belleville Police Department said it is not seeking any additional suspects at this time.
The department expressed gratitude to Swansea Police Department, Illinois State Police Crime Scene Services, Perry County Sheriff’s Department, Perry County Coroner’s Office, and witnesses who were present.
“This is still an active investigation,” Belleville Police said. They encouraged anyone with information to contact the department’s Investigations Division at 618-234-1212.
“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families and friends of all who were affected by this tragic chain of events,” the department added.
