FERGUSON, MO. - A local family is grieving after a beloved mother was shot and killed in Ferguson, Mo., on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, after getting caught in crossfire at a BP gas station. The loved ones of 35-year-old Shakeela Martin, identified as the victim, are now turning to the community for help.

Martin is a mother of five. Loved ones have asked the region for help with funeral costs and support for her children.

According to a GoFundMe organized by Whittley Anderson, Martin had taken her children to get slushies as her family prepared to move into a new home the next day.

“What should have been a joyful family moment became an unimaginable tragedy,” Anderson stated in the fundraiser information. “Shakeela was struck during a shooting at the gas pumps, and her children witnessed the devastating loss of their mother.”

Anderson said Martin was “a devoted mother to five beautiful children who were the center of her world” and said she was “full of love, strength, and hope for the future.”

The family said it is now facing funeral and burial expenses and that Martin did not have life insurance.

“As our family tries to process this heartbreaking tragedy, we are also facing the unexpected financial burden of laying Shakeela to rest,” the fundraiser information said.

The fundraiser says any additional money raised will go toward “helping ease the immediate needs of her five children during this incredibly difficult time.”

“No donation is too small, and if you are unable to give, we ask that you please share this fundraiser and keep Shakeela’s children and our entire family in your prayers,” the fundraiser states.

GoFundMe has a Trust & Safety team of experts who work around the clock and are focused on interacting with organizers and donors, reviewing and vetting fundraisers, and implementing terms of service. Donations for this particular fundraiser are protected.
