St. Clair County Sheriff's Office Provides More About Knife Attack and Subsequent Shooting

Deputies responded to a violent disturbance involving a knife attack at a local residence, resulting in an officer firing their weapon at the suspect.

BELLEVILLE - The St. Clair County Sheriff's Office has released some additional information on the officer-involved shooting on Sunday, Jan. 11, 2026.

The sheriff's office said at 7:13 a.m. on Sunday, Jan. 11th, 2026, the St. Clair County Sheriff's Department received a 911 call reporting an active disturbance at a residence in the 2600 block of Old Collinsville Road in unincorporated Belleville.

"The caller advised that a male family member had attacked relatives at the home with a knife, causing significant injuries," the sheriff's office said. "When deputies arrived at the area, they were confronted by the armed suspect, and a deputy fired his weapon, striking the suspect."

The sheriff's office said the suspect was transported to a local hospital in serious, but "stable condition."

St. Clair County Sheriff Richard Watson requested that the Illinois State Police Zone 6 Investigations Division assist his agency in conducting an independent investigation per the agency policy because of the officer-involved shooting.

This remains an active investigation, and any further updates will be provided by the Illinois State Police Zone 6.
