“The City of St. Louis, along with our Parks, Recreation, and Forestry Department, is proud to make this investment in the Tuskegee Airmen Field and in the lives of all the young people who will come here to play,” said Mayor Cara Spencer. “We know this field will be home to many competitive sports events, but it will also be a place where community is built, where wonderful memories are made, where teamwork is celebrated, and where young people have the opportunity to gain the skills and confidence they need as they grow.”

Funded by the Parks, Recreation, and Forestry Department, the project is bringing new life to a field that was once home to the Sumner High School football team, but needed improvements that have now been made.

“Our department chose to invest available funding into Tuskegee Airmen Field and our Recreation Division’s sports programming,” said Greg Hayes, Director, Department of Parks, Recreation, and Forestry. “The result is a state-of-the-art field and amenities that our City’s youth truly deserve.”

Tuskegee Airmen Field was first developed by the late Alderman Sam Moore and was named in honor of the first Black aviators and ground crews who served with the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II.

The newly renovated field includes a midfield logo with the Tuskegee Airmen emblem. Permission for this logo was granted by the Tuskegee Airmen, Inc. National Office.
