Suspect Was Wearing Clown Suit: East St. Louis 15-Year-Old Charged in Fatal Bus Stop Stabbing

EAST ST. LOUIS — A 15-year-old East St. Louis juvenile was arrested after a 78-year-old Jennings, Mo., man was stabbed to death Sunday night, Aug. 3, 2026, while waiting at a bus stop in East St. Louis, Illinois State Police said.

The Illinois State Police Division of Criminal Investigation Zone 6 Public Safety Enforcement Group said special agents arrested the juvenile male on a charge of first-degree murder, a Class M felony, after the stabbing attack that killed John W. Allen.

East St. Louis police responded shortly after 10 p.m. Aug. 3, 2026, to the area of 76th Street and State Street for a report of a body in the roadway. Police said Allen was waiting at a bus stop when he was stabbed in a random attack by a suspect wearing a clown outfit.

State police said special agents arrived at the scene and quickly identified a juvenile suspect. Agents later located the juvenile at a residence and took him into custody.

The juvenile was formally charged Wednesday, Aug. 5, 2026, with first-degree murder. He remained in custody, police said.

Allen has been described by his family as a Navy veteran who regularly took the bus to visit relatives in Metro East. The family is heartbroken about his death.

The East St. Louis Police Department, East St. Louis Housing Authority, St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office, Caseyville Police Department, Belleville Police Department, Cahokia Heights Police Department and Fairview Heights Police Department assisted state police with the investigation.

State police said no additional information was available. No booking photo was available.

The charge is not evidence against the defendant, and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
