UPDATE: Person Found Dead After Fiery Alton Pickup Crash

Police say a pickup left State Street late Sunday, struck a parked vehicle and a tree, then caught fire in a residential yard. Investigators are still working to identify the victim.

ALTON, Ill. — A person was found dead inside a burning pickup truck after a crash late Sunday in Alton, authorities said.

Officers with the Alton Police Department were dispatched at about 11:22 p.m. Sunday, June 14, 2026, to the 2200 block of State Street for a traffic crash involving a vehicle on fire. When officers arrived, they found a pickup truck fully engulfed in flames in the front yard of a residence.

A preliminary investigation indicates the vehicle was traveling northbound on State Street when it left the roadway, struck a parked and unoccupied vehicle, and then collided with a tree, according to police.

The Alton Fire Department responded and extinguished the fire. After the fire was brought under control, human remains of a single individual were discovered inside the vehicle.

The Madison County Coroner’s Office responded, took custody of the remains, and is working to confirm the identity of the deceased and determine the official cause and manner of death.

No other people were injured in the crash.

The Alton Police Department, assisted by the Madison County Coroner’s Office, continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
