ALTON - The Alton Police Department is investigating a shooting that left a victim in critical condition after officers were dispatched Saturday night, Feb. 7, 2026, to a residence in the Alton Acres neighborhood, authorities said.

Officers were sent at about 9:08 p.m. Feb. 7, 2026, to a home in the 3100 block of Lawn Street in Alton, after a report that a person had been shot, according to information provided by the Alton Police Department.
During the initial investigation, officers identified a person of interest because “the involved parties were known to one another,” Alton Police Chief Jarrett Ford said.
The victim was treated at the scene and taken by the Alton Fire Department to a local hospital, police said.
The victim was later transferred to a St. Louis-area hospital and is listed in "critical condition," Chief Ford said.
At about 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, police contacted the person of interest, who “is being held at the Alton City Jail pending further investigation,” Chief Ford said.
The Illinois State Police Crime Scene Services processed the scene, and the Madison County Sheriff’s Office assisted, police said.
