Aubrey “Ray” Russell, age 89, of Granite City, Illinois, passed peacefully into the arms of his Savior on Sunday, November 16, 2025, at Stearns Nursing and Rehab Center. Born on April 5, 1936, in Dover, Tennessee, Ray was the cherished son of the late Lee and Leona (Morgan) Russell.
On November 12, 1955, Ray married the love of his life, Evelyn Dean Crismon, in Mississippi. From that day forward, Ray and Evelyn walked through life hand in hand, building a marriage grounded in faith, devotion, and unwavering love. Their beautiful union continued for nearly seventy years until Evelyn’s passing on April 10, 2025. Their reunion in heaven brings comfort to all who knew their remarkable bond.
Ray retired in 2009 from Stein Steel Mill Service, where he worked for many dedicated years as a truck driver. He approached his work with integrity and pride, providing faithfully for his family. A man of deep faith, Ray loved serving the Lord and enjoyed attending various churches throughout the Granite City area. With a natural curiosity and a steady hand, he was a true jack of all trades—never happier than when he was out in his garage, tinkering, turning a wrench, or breathing life back into an old engine.
Ray’s greatest joy, however, was not found in work or hobbies, but in the laughter, presence, and love of his family. His heart was never more full than when surrounded by those he cherished most. He leaves behind a legacy rich in kindness, humility, and the quiet strength of a life well lived.
Ray was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife, Evelyn Russell; and his dear children, Bobby Russell, Tammy Myint, and Cynthia “Cindy” Tucker.
He is survived by his devoted son-in-law, Pastor Marvin Tucker, of Granite City, Illinois; and by his treasured grandchildren: Amanda (Michael) Vivod of Granite City, Illinois; Robert (Jennifer) Tucker of Granite City, Illinois; Kassie (Joe) Bettag of Troy, Illinois; Raymond (Stephanie) Myint of Belleville, IL; and Timothy Myint of Granite City, IL. Ray was a proud and loving great-grandfather to Chase Tucker, Carter Vivod, Aiden Vivod, Gavin Vivod, Joey Bettag, Makenna Bettag, Noah Bettag, Jaden (Michael) Beatte, and Nyla Viglasky. He is also survived by his dear brother, Norman (Cindy) Russell of Staunton, Illinois; along with many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends who will forever hold his memory close.
A service in celebration of Ray’s life will be held on Thursday, November 20, 2025, at Irwin Chapel in Granite City, Illinois. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m., followed by the funeral service at 11:00 a.m., officiated by his son-in-law, Pastor Marvin Tucker. Ray will be laid to rest during a private interment at Sunset Hill Memorial Estates in Glen Carbon, Illinois.
