EDWARDSVILLE - Bonnie Lee Berry, 102, died at 8:26 p.m., Monday, September 21, 2026, at Hitz Memorial Home in Alhambra.
She was born on March 10, 1924, in St. Louis, Missouri, the daughter of the late Harry and Thelma (Hall) Steingrubey.
She married Harold Berry on September 29, 1951, at the First Baptist Church in Wood River. Together, they built a life centered around family and raised their two daughters. They shared nearly 34 years of marriage prior to his death on June 29, 1985.
Bonnie lived her 102 years with an enduring curiosity about the world around her and a genuine interest in the people who filled it. She possessed a lifelong appreciation for the performing arts, particularly music, drama and theater, and found many ways to share those interests with others. She sang in the choir at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Jerseyville and, for a time, could also be found at the piano at the former 518 South Restaurant in Jerseyville, sharing her love of music with those around her.
Wherever life took her, Bonnie believed in becoming part of the community she called home. Over the years, she was actively involved with the Maeystown Preservation Society, the Carrollton Community Chorus and the Jerseyville Woman’s Club, among other activities. Her interests were broad and her desire to continue learning never seemed to fade. She was an avid reader and enjoyed politics, world affairs, travel, history and anything that offered an opportunity to expand her horizons, experience something new or better understand the world. For all that captured her interest throughout her life, the people she loved remained at its center.
Bonnie treasured time spent with family and friends and was happiest when she could lend a hand, offer encouragement or simply be present for someone she cared about. Her long life afforded her the special blessing of watching her family grow through several generations, and the relationships she shared with them were among her greatest joys.
She is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Andrea Berry of Hardin, Montana, and Margaret (Matthew) Tueth of Edwardsville; three grandchildren, Adrienne Schaefer of Edwardsville, Rachel (Raúl) Mariscal of Hudsonville, Michigan, and Baker Berry-Maghamseh of Hardin, Montana; four great-grandchildren, Meara Schaefer, Elle Schaefer, Mila Mariscal and Nico Mariscal; as well as two sisters, Dorothy Kay (Vernon) Matzenbacher of Fults and Thelma “Peggy” (Ralph) Ruhmann of Edwardsville.
In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by four brothers, Harry (Maxine) Steingrubey, Richard (Dorothy) Steingrubey, Donald (Roberta) Steingrubey, and Francis (Adele) Steingrubey; and one sister, Patricia (Gaillard) Krewer.
A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10 a.m., Friday, October 9, 2026 at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Jerseyville.
Inurnment will follow at St. Francis Cemetery in Jerseyville.
