Carl Tanksley

Carl Eugene Tanksley Sr., 83, of Granite City, Illinois, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, at Christian Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri. Born on December 29, 1942, in Mound City, Illinois, Carl was the beloved son of the late Cecil Tanksley, Christena (Marrs) Duncan and Red Duncan.

On January 22, 1966, Carl married the love of his life, Rosemary Kunsman. Their marriage was a true partnership built on devotion, laughter, and unwavering love until Rosemary’s passing on January 6, 2002. Together they created a family that became Carl’s greatest pride and joy.

Carl dedicated 40 years of his professional life to Kraft-Heinz, where he worked as a microbiology lab technician. His strong work ethic, intelligence, and commitment to excellence were evident to all who worked alongside him. Carl continued serving his community as a custodian at First Presbyterian Church in Granite City for 20 years — a role he embraced with humility and quiet dedication.

In his younger years, Carl was known for his competitive spirit and athletic talent as a gifted fast-pitch softball pitcher. His love of the game continued as he coached his daughter Mary’s softball teams and served the Granite City Park District, generously giving his time to mentor young athletes. He was patient, encouraging, and proud to help shape both skills and character.

Carl had a playful and tender side that delighted everyone around him. Each Christmas season, he would put on a Santa Claus suit and visit family and friends, reading ’Twas the Night Before Christmas with warmth and sparkle in his eye. Those moments became treasured memories for many children — and adults — who experienced his joyful spirit.

A devoted fan of the St. Louis Cardinals, Carl rarely missed a chance to cheer on his team. But above all else, his greatest happiness came from time spent with his family. He adored his children, cherished his grandchildren, and found special delight in spoiling his granddaughters. Becoming a great-grandfather brought him immense pride and fulfillment.

Carl was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Rosemary; his cherished son, Carl Tanksley Jr.; his parents; and his siblings, Mary Lucille Tanksley, Carlene Haney and Ken Tanksley.

He leaves to treasure his memory his loving children, Donald (Kay McCain) Tanksley of Cahokia, Illinois, and Mary (Tim) Watson of Granite City, Illinois; his dear daughter-in-law, Lisa Tanksley of Kirbyville, Missouri; his sisters, Stella Hoover, Janet Evans, Debbie Staples, and Donna Williams; his beloved granddaughters, Amber Marie (Bradley) Strength and Macy Rose Watson; his precious great-grandson, Andreu Eugene Strength; along with many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends whose lives he touched in countless ways.

Carl’s legacy is one of faithfulness, generosity, humor, and deep love for family. He will be remembered for his steady presence, kind heart, and the joy he brought into the lives of those around him.

A visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 25, 2026, at Irwin Chapel in Granite City, Illinois, with funeral services to follow at 1:00 p.m. Carl will be laid to rest beside his beloved Rosemary at St. John Cemetery in Granite City, Illinois.

Memorial donations may be made to American Cancer Society and will be accepted at the funeral chapel.
