JERSEYVILLE-  Catherine Geraldine Turpin, 88, died at 4:40 a.m., Friday, November 4, 2016 at St. Clare's Hospital in Alton.She was born in Hardin on August 27, 1928, and was one of eight children born to the late Charles & Mary (Woelfel) Schleeper.Catherine attended St. Norbert's Catholic School and for a short time, Hardin High School, before graduating from Jersey Township High School in 1946.Soon after she began working at the International Shoe Factory and later Roach's Shoe Store in Jerseyville, until 1964 when accepted a position at the Owens Illinois Glass Works in Alton, where she remained until the plant closing.Catherine was devoted to both her faith and her family.  After her retirement, she walked daily to morning mass at Holy Ghost Catholic Church, and continued to so until her failing health no allowed her to do so.  She enjoyed many trips across the United States, camping with family, crocheting and quilting, both at church and home.  One of her proudest achievements, other than being Mom and Grandma, was winning "Best In Show" for quilts at the Jersey County Fair.She first married Verlin Summers on May 8, 1948 and during their 22 year marriage they brought into the world the 5 children that she cherished so.  She later married Glenn Turpin on July 21, 1979 in Jerseyville, and together they were blessed with 27 happy years together until his death on Nov. 25, 2006.Surviving are her five children & their spouses, William and Glenda Summers of St. John, Mo., Gerald "Jerry" and Ethel Mae Summers, Mary Kay and Richard Perdun all of Jerseyville, Margaret "Margie" and Mike McCoy of Grafton, and Anna Marie "Annie" Summers and her fiance' Craig Adkins of Jerseyville; 13 Grandchildren; 23 Great Grandchildren; and a sister, Edith Dorsey of Alton.In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, AloysSchleeper and Joseph Schleeper; four sisters, Rita Davis, Sister Mary Paula Schleeper, Edna Mae Dover and Helen Barry.Visitation will be from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville.A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 11 a.m. Monday at the Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Jerseyville, with Father Peter Donohoe officiating.Burial will be in the St. Francis Xavier Cemetery in Jerseyville.Memorials may be given to either the St. Francis/Holy Ghost Catholic Schools in Jerseyville or St. Anthony's Hospice.
