
Charles James Arter, 93, a long time resident of Godfrey, died Friday, August 19, 2016 at Manor on the Square in Roswell, GA. Born October 2, 1922 in Jerseyville, he was the son of James and Nellie (Houze) Arter. Mr. Arter served in the U.S. Army from 1943-1945 and was a member of the VFW Post 1308. He was a very handy man and even built his own home. He loved being outdoors and was a former member of the Sportsman’s Club. He had been a lab technician for Sinclair Refineries and later retired as a truck driver for Rex Construction in 1976. On February 8, 1947 he married the former Jean Frances Allen. She preceded him in death on October 30, 1968. Surviving is a son, James R. “Jim” Arter and his wife Kathryn of Roswell, GA, a granddaughter, Kimberly Arter Ritger, three great grandchildren, Henry James Ritger, Lucy Jane Ritger, and June Elizabeth Ritger all living in Georgia, and a sister, Catherine Platto. Along with his parents and wife he was preceded in death by a brother, William Ralph Arter and a sister Maurietta Weller. Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. until time of funeral service at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, August 24, 2016 at Gent Funeral Home in Alton. Reverend Steven Helfrich will officiate.
