David R. Hendricks, 57, of Alton, died September 12, 2026, peacefully in his home. David was born to Russell and Alicia (Roe) Hendricks in Alton, Illinois.

For most of David's adult life, he was self-employed. As part of that work, he traveled throughout the southwestern states and loved to tell stories about the cattle and horse ranches he served. He had the "memory of an elephant" and could recall about every experience he had with great detail. He was a true free spirit and most of the time, rules were something for everyone else and conventional wisdom rarely applied to his decision making.

David was personable, funny, and knew no stranger. David was a gregarious man in his young adulthood; his laughter was infectious. Known by his friends as "CD", he was always up for a get together, canoe trip or concert. He had a musical passion for the Grateful Dead and in his last big "hurrah" he saw Dead and Company in San Francisco last August. Whether it was his life circumstances or his intensifying health concerns in these last few years that got him downtrodden, David remained a convicted believer in Jesus Christ!

David is preceded in death by his parents. David is survived by his sister, Mary (Jay) Phillips of Godfrey; a niece, Lucy (Bo) Huffman, of Kansas City, Missouri; and a nephew, Riley Phillips of Godfrey.

He is in care of Gent Funeral Home and there will be a private burial of his ashes at Roselawn Cemetery at a later date.
