Edwin Volkening

Edwin Fred Volkening, 87, died at 10:59 a.m. Wednesday, April 12, 2017 at his home in Alton. Born March 13, 1930 in Elgin, IL, he was the son of Edwin and Helena (Seiler) Volkening. Edwin served in the U.S. Marine Corps and was a member of the American Legion Post 126, the Alton Wood River Sportsmen’s Club, and the Evangelical United Church of Christ. He retired in 2006 as an aeronautical engineer with McDonnell Douglas now Boeing. On January 29, 1960 he married the former Pauline N. Kehr in Alton. She survives. Also surviving is a granddaughter, Amanda Louise Volkening and two great grandchildren, Blake and Lilly Volkening. Along with his parents he was preceded in death by a son, Kent A. Volkening, two brothers, Marlowe and Delbert Volkening and a sister, Delores Jenny. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until time of funeral service at 1:00 p.m. Monday, April 17, 2017 at Gent Funeral Home in Alton. Reverend Jerry MeCaskey will officiate. Burial will be at Valhalla Memorial Park in Godfrey with full military honors by the VFW Post 1308.
