
Elizabeth C. “Betty” Stegemeier, 93, of Granite City, Illinois, passed away peacefully at 11:35 a.m. on Sunday, August 3, 2025, at Gateway Regional Medical Center.
Born on September 14, 1931, in Litchfield, Illinois, she was the daughter of the late James P. and Winifred (Hayden) Barry. On February 7, 1959, she married the love of her life, Robert J. “Bob” Stegemeier, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Edwardsville. They shared 66 wonderful years together. Bob survives her
A devout Catholic, Betty was a longtime member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Granite City, where she faithfully attended Mass, prayed the Rosary, and served with the Ladies’ Club and the Heavenly Dusters. She was deeply committed to the Right to Life cause, volunteering with the Alpha Center and the P.A.C. van, and was also active in the Knights of Columbus Ladies’ Auxiliary.
Betty was immensely proud of her Irish heritage and cherished her travels to Ireland with family. Known for her warmth and hospitality, she loved entertaining and was especially admired for her cooking. She found great joy in hosting gatherings and playing cards with her card clubs. She cherished her family and enjoyed spending time with her beloved children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
In addition to her beloved husband of 66 years, she is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and John Muich of O’Fallon, Illinois; two sons and daughters-in-law, Bob and Kathy Stegemeier of Granite City and Tom and Marcee Stegemeier of Granite City; six grandchildren and their spouses, Breann Muich, Ryan and Alexa Muich, Brad and Lindsay Hutchings, Amanda and Keith Harris, Chloe and Anthoney Ragnetti and Corey Stegemeier and Sam Stegemeier; eight great grandchildren, Fallyn, Laityn, Hayden, Suttyn, Quinn, Luka, Mabel and Violet; a brother, Joe Barry of Walnut Creek, California; a sister-in-law, Marilynn Barry of Edwardsville; two brothers-in-law and a sister-in-law, Richard and Bobby Ann Stegemeier of Anaheim, California and George Stegemeier of Houston, Texas; many nieces and nephews; cousins; other extended family and many special friends.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Patrick Barry (infant) and James Barry.
In celebration of her life, visitation will be at Irwin Chapel, 3960 Maryville Road in Granite City on Wednesday, August 13, 2025, from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be held at Holy Family Catholic Church, 2606 Washington Avenue in Granite City on Thursday, August 14, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. with Father Steve Thompson as celebrant. Burial will follow at Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Edwardsville.
Memorials may be made to Holy Family Catholic School and to St. Elizabeth Catholic School and may be accepted at the funeral chapel.
