Floyd Eugene (Gene) Flatt, 73, of Jacksonville, Illinois, passed away peacefully in his sleep on July 6, 2026.
Born on December 30, 1952, in Carrollton, Illinois, Gene was the son of the late Earl E. and Bette K. (Davis) Flatt.
In his earlier years, Gene proudly served his country in the United States Army, where he was stationed in West Germany with the 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment. Following his military service, he began a career in law enforcement where he worked for the Pitkin County Sheriff’s Department in Aspen, Colorado, before returning to Illinois to serve with both the South Jacksonville Police Department and the Greene County Sheriff’s Department.
A loving father, Gene cherished time spent with his two sons. He had many passions and was a true history buff. He could often be found meticulously building models, organizing his coin and stamp collections, or spending hours combing through a good antique mall. Gene also had a profound love for animals; he was a true "dog person" who shared his life with many loyal canine companions over the years.
He is survived by his devoted sons, Joseph (Samantha) Flatt and Jonathan (Katherine) Flatt, all of Jerseyville, Illinois; and his four grandchildren, Elaina, Foster, Connor, and Hazel.
He is also survived by his sisters, Barbara Hartung and Kathy (Robert) Zipprich, as well as several nieces and nephews.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents, Earl and Bette Flatt, and his brother-in-law, David Hartung.
