George Demkey

George A. Demkey, 80, passed away at 9:20 am on Sunday, November 2, 2025 at Anderson Hospital in Maryville, IL. 

He was born on July 17, 1945, in Highland, IL, the son of Leonard M. and Opal (Cruthais) Demkey. They preceded him in death.

He married Carol Ann Demkey on October 22, 1985, in Wood River, IL. She preceded him in death.

George is a veteran of the United States Army. He later worked as a truck driver and laborer.

He enjoyed fishing, camping, and working on cars. George loved spending time with his friends and family, and especially cherished his time with grandson, Jordan Demkey.

George is survived by five children, Paula Ozanne (Eddie) of South Dakota, William Varble (Melissa) of Kentucky, Ruth Myers (David) of Edwardsville, IL, Michael Varble (Erica) of East Alton, IL, and Melissa Harpole (James) of Colorado; a brother, Rodger Stritz of Bethalto; a sister, Rae Marie Demkey of Jacksonville; 14 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; as well as several nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Cremation rites to be performed by Elias, Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home in Bethalto, IL.

The family will host a Celebration of Life at a later date.

Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society.
