Jack Downs

Jack E. Downs, 77, died at 1:44 p.m. Sunday, January 2, 2011 in Brighton.  Born January 9, 1933 near Jerseyville, he was the son of Earl and Elizabeth (Coleman) Downs. 

He served in the U.S. Army in Germany during the Korean Conflict and was a member of the VFW Post 1308.  He retired from Nilo Farms and was currently the Road Commissioner for Piasa Township in Jersey County. 

On July 25, 1953 in Brighton, he married the former Louise Kulenkamp.  She preceded him in death on April 21, 1998. 

Surviving are two sisters, Shirley Handling and her husband Jack of Brighton and Jean Mandorca and her husband Colin of Brighton, a niece, Julie Lynch of Oklahoma and two nephews, Daniel Mandorca of Brighton and Jack Handling of Brighton. 

Per Jack’s request, private graveside services will be Saturday at Oak Grove Cemetery in Jerseyville.  Reverend Carl Cook will officiate.  Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.  Gent Funeral Home in Alton is in charge of arrangements.
